umr jalwon mein basar ho ye zaruri to nahin
umr jalvoñ meñ basar ho ye zarūrī to nahīñ
har shab-e-ġham kī sahar ho ye zarūrī to nahīñ
In splendour, life be ever spent, it need not be
That every woe filled night relent, it need not be
chashm-e-sāqī se piyo yā lab-e-sāġhar se piyo
be-ḳhudī āThoñ pahar ho ye zarūrī to nahīñ
Wine from her glance or from a goblet drunk
Result in rapture permanent, it need not be
niiñd to dard ke bistar pe bhī aa saktī hai
un kī āġhosh meñ sar ho ye zarūrī to nahīñ
E'en on a bed of pain, sleep well could come
In her arms,merely, recumbent, it need not be
shaiḳh kartā to hai masjid meñ ḳhudā ko sajde
us ke sajdoñ meñ asar ho ye zarūrī to nahīñ
In mosques the priest does often kneel and pray
That to his pleading God consent, it need not be
sab kī nazroñ meñ ho saaqī ye zarūrī hai magar
sab pe saaqī kī nazar ho ye zarūrī to nahīñ
Each person surely seeks her favour, but
Each person be in her intent, it need not be
mai-kashī ke liye ḳhāmosh bharī mahfil meñ
sirf ḳhayyām kā ghar ho ye zarūrī to nahīñ
