kahīñ banda kahīñ ḳhudā hai ishq
love is the mode and style of love
it's man below and God above
ishq ma.ashūq ishq āshiq hai
ya.anī apnā hī mubtalā hai ishq
both lover and beloved be
love's self-involved entirely
gar parastish ḳhudā kī sābit kī
kisū sūrat meñ ho bhalā hai ishq
if God's worship's true you say
then love is good in every way
dilkash aisā kahāñ hai dushman-e-jāñ
mudda.ī hai pa mudda.ā hai ishq
so charming beautiful is she?
that love I seek, tho foe she be
hai hamāre bhī taur kā āshiq
jis kisī ko kahīñ huā hai ishq
is there a paramour like me
'mongst lovers whosoever be
koī ḳhvāhāñ nahīñ mohabbat kā
tū kahe jins-e-nā-ravā hai ishq
Love an improper thing you deem
for love does no one ever dream?
'mīr'-jī zard hote jaate ho
kyā kahīñ tum ne bhī kiyā hai ishq
miirji, colour's drained from you
by love, have you been smitten too?
